House Mantra: “Until It Is Faced!”
“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced”
James Baldwin was a writer and playwright born in New York City. One of the 20th century's greatest writers, Baldwin broke new literary ground with the exploration of racial and social issues in his many works. He was especially well known for his essays on the black experience in America. Baldwin has ties in our Bronx Community, where he attended and graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School.
Never craving the role of a spokesperson or a leader, Baldwin saw his personal mission as bearing "witness to the truth." He accomplished this mission through his extensive literary legacy.
